The last place you’d expect to find one of Miami’s best bars is at the back of a hostel, but that’s part of charm at The Broken Shaker. A haven for hipsters and cocktail enthusiasts alike, this local haunt is a welcome escape from the haughty nightclubs and lounges of South Beach.

The Broken Shaker is like going to a party in a friend’s backyard, only with better drinks. Guests sit on patio furniture around an outdoor pool and the scene easily transforms from day to night. It’s been named the Best Bar in America by The Daily Meal and ranks number 18 on the list of The World’s Top 50 Bars.

You can order a regular rum and coke or margarita here, but you’re better off going with the specialty drink of the day. The bartenders here get creative and mix unusual herbs and liquors into their ever-changing concoctions. The drinks are seasonal and can feature anything from passion fruit to avocado. If punch is more up your alley, they have a potent potion available every day at a bargain price.

If you‘re thinking about visiting in the daytime, 27 Restaurant and Bar is also located at the Freehand hostel and is a popular spot for brunch. Both venues share the seating area around the pool, and encourage you to hop aboard the inflatable floating unicorn. They also share a decorative element of choice—Christmas lights, which remain on display throughout the year.

Lounge, please!

If you’re driving, plan to hunt for parking. There’s a public lot nearby but it gets packed quickly and finding a spot anywhere on the beach can be challenging. There’s valet parking available but at a hefty price. Since this is a popular place, they’ve started to institute reserved seating which can make it hard to find a spot to rest or set down your drink when it gets crowded. If you want to enjoy your time at The Broken Shaker without the stress of added crowds, try going mid-to-late afternoon.

When it first opened, The Broken Shaker had games, like Life and Jenga, available for guests to play. It was meant to be on brand with the backyard theme. You still see games on occasion but they’re not as prevalent. Sometimes there’s a DJ playing though mostly it’s music played over the venue’s speakers. The bar offers small bites, though it’s more known for its drinks than its food. Those looking to find good food for cheap after a night out on the town will be better served by ending their evening at Pizza Rustica.

If you want to experience a less pretentious spot than what you’re used to in Miami, with far superior drinks, then make sure to stop by The Broken Shaker on your next visit to the 305.

How fun! I would definitely seek out this bar in Miami rather than the trendy, high-brow palaces where it’s more about being seen than relaxing with friends. Should have known Jen on a Jet Plane would know a good spot!

This place looks so fun! I’d definitely like to try the specialty drink of the day. Also love the tips on when to go and how to deal with parking. Makes the experience so much more enjoyable!
